About Karenni

The Karenni are one of the ethnic groups in Burma/Myanmar. We come from the mountainous eastern part of Burma bordering Thailand.

Burma is ruled by the Burmese military regime and regarded as one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. We have been struggling for our freedom and rights for more than half centuries. Like other ethnic groups, we have been resisting brutal political, economic, religion and cultural suppression by the regime.  The  army  present throughout our land and controls the people through forced portering, forced labour, forced relocation, rape, looting, torture, destruction of property,  and killing.

As a result of constant abuses, thousands of Burmese people mainly ethnic groups including Karenni cross into Thailand, India, Bangladesh, and China, and become refugees in these countries. There are many more who cannot get across the borders and have become internally displaced persons (IDPs) inside Burma. Currently, there are approximately 20,000 Karenni living in Thailand as refugees.
